Bringing in History So Background Knowledge Isn’t a Mystery Social Studies/ELA 6-12

Many texts students have to read, both informational and literary non-fiction, include needing to understand background knowledge involving historical information and/or allusions. Teachers readily admit this background knowledge is a hindrance to students deeply understanding these texts. In this session, teachers will collaborate to create a background-knowledge resource packet full of texts and visuals that can be paired with or included into any mini- and/or full-thematic unit, as well as integrate the social studies and ELA curriculums.
